Think Human Love and Relationships are Interesting?

…well, think again! While clearing out the magazine archive, we came across an article about the love life of various animals. It’s a pretty gripping read! Fun facts about animal relationships:

- Did you know that Albatrosses live monogamously for years and keep flying back to the same relationship, even after years?
- Gorillas aren’t adventurous lovers, either. Female Gorillas only mate with one man in their entire life.
- Bowerbirds, on the other hand, have pretty high standards. The females inspect their man’s nest before even considering a relationship. If it isn’t pretty enough, they move right on.
- There is an amazingly long list of species who get by without males altogether. There are quite a few insects and reptiles that procreate without any help from men.
- Other species like to have a man around, but can make do with females turning male in case of a man-shortage.
- The mating ritual of the squid sounds like a visual spectacle. They wave their ten arms around and light up with colour, before turning completely white.
- If you’re allergic to dust mites, you already know there’s nothing lovable about the little beasts, but even their love life is gross! The females nest in others’ eggs, the babies eat their mothers, and the men get a good start in life by mating with their sisters, then dying. Then the whole thing starts over.
- A man who calls a woman prickly has obviously never witnessed hedgehogs making love! Somehow they manage to come out of it unharmed…
- Lobster is often the highlight of a meal for lovers. It was, however, news to us that lobsters themselves are pretty accomplished lovers – their foreplay alone lasts several days, even if the act itself is pretty short.
- Rhinos, on the other hand, are all about quality over quantity. They only make love once a year, but it lasts up to one and a half hours!
- Making love takes such a toll on male Wombats, however, that they die before their progeny are born.

…and we thought human relationships were interesting!
