The first couple to ever find love through a computer

Earlier this week, we posted a video and mused that the lady singing about finding love through a computer was way ahead of her time in 1968. But was computer matchmaking really a thing of the future in 1968? Well, not quite. In fact, the first time a couple was ever matched by a computer was on a TV show in 1956!

“Remington Rand’s Univac No. 21 turned Cupid, brought together a flesh-and-blood couple as scientifically selected “ideal marriage mates.”"

The computer, which was worth a cool Million at the time, was fed with questionnaires completed by 4000 singles looking to find love. The questionnaire was made up of 32 relationship-relevant questions on topics like sex, race, religion, politics, lifestyle and, hilariously, “preferences for double or twin beds”. The computer found a perfect couple among the entries and the two later got engaged!

oliver-be2When Marketing Manager Oliver joined be2, worldwide matchmaking was already planned, but far from a reality. Nevertheless, the promise of internationality, the friendly be2 team and the chance to help people find love was tempting. Today, he’s still happy with his choice – and with be2!

1. How do you help be2 help people find love?
As Online Marketer, I help the right people find be2 – those who are really looking for a serious relationship.

2. What do people ask about your job in worldwide matchmaking?
What my girlfriend thinks about it. After all I have to test other worldwide matchmaking agencies to monitor the competition. She’s pretty relaxed about it, though :-)

3. What’s important to you when you think about worldwide matchmaking?
The quality of the matches – and that they are active.

4. Which be2 country is important to you personally?
Belgium, where I spent the best of my college years.

5. “Love is…”

Sesame Street was 40 on Tuesday. We already posted a video earlier this week, now here’s the dialogue from that video – an answer to the question “What is Love?”:

Grover: “What is love?”
Chelsea: “Love is something to do with hugs and kisses and a warm feeling inside.”
Grover: “Yeaaaah! Boy, love sounds great!”

christmas-packagesChristmas still seems far away, but we are already looking forward to mulled wine and Christmas pudding, to Christmas parties and presents. Many others are less fortunate: to them, Christmas isn’t just far away, but impossibly far. Children in need often have little to look forward to at this time of year, as their families can’t afford to celebrate Christmas or give them presents.

Christmas-giftThat is why we are happy to support Operation Christmas Child. With 18 others from the be2 team, armed with 20 shoe boxes, 50 meters of wrapping paper, scissors, glue and loads of Christmas presents, we are wrapping packages that children in need across the world will open at Christmas. Last year, Operation Christmas Child was able to provide more than a Million children with a present to open at Christmas – thanks to generous donations and the help of many shoebox-packers.

weihnachten1This year many be2 staff are taking part, packing Christmas gift boxes for a few hours after work. Do you want to give a Christmas gift to a child in need? Taking part in Operation Christmas Child is simple: Read more
